FATHER AND SON ???
I don’t know how many of you are familiar with Cat Steven’s (today known as Yusuf Islam) famous song ‘Father and Son’ in which a father tries to keep calm his frustrated son, who plans to start a new life for himself. In the song, the singer takes both sides as the father giving advice and the son telling about his feelings. That is to say, the” father” wants to safeguard his “son” from all the dangers, pains, and struggles of the world, but finally notices that he needs to let go. The song is especially for families who can’t break loose.
While I was listening to this touching and thought-provoking song, somehow I found myself thinking about Christians’ view of “Father and Son”, namely “God and Jesus”. Did Jesus and God have/had similar confrontations? What was the nature of their relationship besides God telling Jesus to help people to find the right path? Did they have a relationship of a typical father and son? No matter what their spiritual role is, they are eventually a family. To exemplify, when I remember my relationship with my father over the years, I confess that our communication included lots of conflicts in expectations, interest, goals, and actions. We had times when we were happy and angry with each other. At times, I felt bad when he kept silent and did not speak to me for an unbearable time because of my gaffes and mistakes.
